Heritage Exteriors Require a Different Painter

Not every painter understands what they are looking at when they stand in front of a 1925 Glenora character home. Original wood drop siding with 70 years of paint on it, decorative bargeboards and fascia details that took a craftsman a week to install, brick that has been painted and needs a compatible breathable system — these exterior surfaces require patience, the right products and a painter who genuinely understands heritage construction. Sameh trained forfive years in Paris on heritage buildings and brought that understanding back to Edmonton. Heritage home exteriors have been a core part of Blue Nile's work ever since.
COMPATIBLE COATING SYSTEMS

07 · Questions & Answers

Heritage Home Exterior Painting FAQ

A few common questions before starting an exterior painting project.

What products do you use on original wood siding in heritage homes?

We specify penetrating oil-based or alkyd primers for original wood siding products that soak into the wood grain and stabilize aging surfaces rather than sitting on top where they can peel. For topcoats we use high-quality flexible acrylic latex systems from Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams selected specifically for wood siding performance in Edmonton's climate.

Can you paint brick on a heritage home?

Yes — but carefully. Brick needs a breathable masonry coating that allows moisture vapor to escape while protecting the surface. We assess each brick exterior individually before specifying any product — the wrong coating on brick causes serious long-term problems that are expensive to reverse. We use compatible, breathable masonry paint systems from reputable suppliers.

Do you work in Glenora, Riverdale, Westmount, and Highlands?

Yes. These are the neighbourhoods we know best for heritage exterior work. We have completed exterior projects on heritage homes throughout Glenora, Riverdale, Westmount, Highlands, Laurier Heights, Crestwood, and Grovenor over the past 15+ years. We understand these homes and we love working on them.

How do you handle exterior paint on a home with 70+ years of paint layers?

We assess the condition of existing paint layers carefully. If layers are well-bonded and stable, we clean, scuff sand and prime over them with compatible systems. If layers are lifting, peeling, or incompatible, we recommend stripping back to sound substrate before repainting — a more involved process but the only approach that delivers a lasting result on heavily painted heritage surfaces.

Can you match the existing exterior colour on our heritage home?

Yes. We colour-match existing exterior paint precisely and we also help you research period-appropriate heritage colour palettes if you want to restore your home's original colour scheme. Pam can help you navigate both options — whether you want an accurate heritage restoration or a fresh modern palette that still respects the home's architecture.

Are you licensed and insured for heritage home exterior work?

Yes. City of Edmonton Licensed (Licence #639657327-001), Fully Insured and WCB Covered. Written workmanship warranty on every project.
