Our Painting Process in Edmonton

A professional finish begins long before paint reaches the wall. Blue Nile’s process organizes scope, protection, surface preparation, products, scheduling and quality control so clients understand what happens at every stage.

From first contact to final walkthrough

A seven-step painting process built around clarity

The exact sequence changes for interiors, exteriors, cabinets and commercial properties, but the same responsibilities remain: define the work, protect the property, prepare correctly, apply the right system and verify the result.

Project details and initial conversation

Pamella gathers the property location, project type, surfaces, approximate size, timing and any access or deadline requirements. Photos can help determine whether an immediate site visit is required.

On-site walkthrough and condition review

Sameh and/or Pamella reviews surfaces, previous coatings, repairs, protection needs, height, access and colour plans. For occupied or commercial spaces, staging and working hours are discussed early.

Written scope, products and pricing

The proposal identifies included areas, preparation, coating systems and pricing. Clear exclusions and assumptions reduce surprises and make estimates easier to compare.

Scheduling, colours and site planning

Pamella confirms dates, colour selections and coordination with homeowners, builders, designers or property managers. Materials, crew size and equipment are planned for the approved scope.

Protection and surface preparation

Floors, furnishings, fixtures, landscaping and adjacent surfaces are protected. Cleaning, scraping, patching, sanding, caulking and priming are completed according to surface condition.

Professional coating application

Paint, stain, lacquer or specialty coatings are applied using the method appropriate for the surface: brush, roller, spray or a controlled combination. Work is staged to maintain clean access and consistent finishes.

Inspection, touch-ups and handover

Completed areas are reviewed under practical lighting, touch-ups are addressed and protection is removed carefully. The project closes with a walkthrough, labelled leftover products when applicable and warranty information.

Preparation standards

What happens before the finish coat

Preparation is adjusted to the material and condition. The purpose is not to add unnecessary steps; it is to solve adhesion, appearance and durability problems before they are sealed under paint.

Interior walls and ceilings

  • Protect floors, counters, furniture and fixtures
  • Fill dents, fastener holes and minor cracks
  • Sand repaired or rough areas
  • Prime repairs, stains or difficult surfaces
  • Confirm sheen and colour placement

Exterior siding, stucco and trim

  • Review weather and moisture conditions
  • Wash or clean as required
  • Remove unstable coating
  • Repair cracks, gaps and failed sealant
  • Use compatible primers and exterior systems

Cabinets, doors and millwork

  • Label and organize removable parts
  • Clean grease and surface contaminants
  • Sand for adhesion and smoothness
  • Prime for the existing finish and substrate
  • Control dust and spray conditions
Project-specific planning

How the process changes by project type

Occupied homes

Work is sequenced around living areas, pets, access and daily cleanup. Protection and communication are especially important when clients remain in the home.

Custom homes and renovations

Blue Nile coordinates with builders and designers, confirms finish schedules and works around other trades so completed surfaces are protected.

Commercial properties

Planning addresses customer access, operating hours, low-odour options, phased work, lifts or equipment and daily site organization.

Frequently asked questions

Painting-process questions

How long will my painting project take?

Timing depends on size, surface condition, preparation, drying time, crew size and access. The written proposal and scheduling conversation provide the practical project window.

How are colours and sheens confirmed?

Pamella can review existing selections or help narrow practical colour and sheen combinations. Final selections should be documented before materials are ordered.

Do you move and protect furniture?

Furniture staging and protection requirements are discussed during the walkthrough. Large or specialty items may require separate arrangements.

How many coats will be applied?

The coating system depends on colour change, substrate, existing condition, product and coverage. The written scope should identify the intended system rather than relying on a universal one-coat promise.

Can work be completed after hours?

Commercial evening, overnight and weekend scheduling can be arranged when the scope, access and building requirements support it.

What happens if additional repairs are discovered?

The condition is documented and discussed before work outside the agreed scope proceeds. This keeps pricing and responsibility clear.
